in the shadows

The Ice Queen called last night
while packing for the morning plane,
to Turkey, Europe, Africa
and outward to the sun;

she called to leave security
where she thought it would be safe.

I told her I was marrying,
she choked a bit
swore,
caught herself,
she mumbled soft amenities,
she stumbled on her words,
where just before had bubbled joy
of self-accomplishment,
was now self-conscious
awkward silence,
closing doors,
the inward pulling self-defense
of children caught off guard;

thoughts of opportunities
and passions passed
of old realities
regrets
uncertainties,
and wanting not to cry,
all came flashing from her mind,
and suddenly
the Ice Queen seized control.

I wished her luck,
much happiness,
yes
she would write,
we plan to meet in years;
the call was at an end
and then,
she softly said
"I love you"
honestly
the first and only time.

....it's true -- living well IS the best revenge. And a tiny crack in the wall, where a tree may grow and bring the whole thing down, priceless.

You melted the ice queen...

smiles and nodding.

An ex tracked me down once about 12 years ago, and when he heard my baby boy cry over the phone, he asked, "What is that?"

"Life." I answered.

oh I know this one well, icebox.

Hugs you.

icebox

I just saw my x at my son's on Thanksgiving...I kind of like him now.  I read him some poems that made him cry.
