Dominic liked to be called Mike
Because he thought it made him one of the guys,
When you are in the fifth grade
One thinks they need to be one of the guys.

By our sophomore year Dominic returned
To being Dominic, a lone Italian kid in
A sea of German-Mennonite farm boys
Named Kroeker, Friesen, Schmidtt and Epp.

For my ninth birthday my mother bought me
An aquarium and filled it with guppies
I would often stay up at night gazing through the glass
as my fish endlessly circled in their rectangular universe.

At sixteen I bought a car and spent Saturday nights in Wichita,
Which is where German-Mennonite farm boys go
To escape the farm, to learn the ways of the world,
Did I forget to say?  My fish had all died.

Now farm boys aren’t welcome in Wichita bars,
But Dominic was, and when we saw each other,
We didn’t because Dominics and German-Mennonites
Don’t see each other while in rectangular bars.

At eighteen I headed off for college
Leaving my empty fishbowl at home.
Rumor was Dominic had moved to Wichita
And had became a dealer and a tweaker.

When I was twenty, Dominic OD’d and died.
The funeral was in a German-Mennonite Church
With Kroeker’s, Friesens, Schmidtts and Epps in attendance,
After the funeral I bought me a guppy and I named him Mike.

I haven't met the German-Mennonite community around here, yet.  But, I have met a few Italians that go to school here.

Well done.  The story was aptly expressed.

The creator of the Simpsons happens to come for Mennonite stock. There are a few here and there. By the way, have any idea who's ranked No. 1?

Touching tale of a sad ending to boy who wanted to be one of the gang..and it reminds me of the high school chums I had that also risked their lives...
