Listening to every heart

Christmas 1959 ~*~ Revisited 2003

                             Even now in
                             blackest white
                             sounds still scurry
                             through the night;
                             pine scents drift
                             upon the scene
                             of tinsle’d, garland’d
                             evergreens…

                             “Christmas will
                             be lean this year”
                             mother whispered
                             in our ear,
                             so we gathered
                             toys for those
                             who had naught
                             and filled our hearts
                             from smiles we got…

                             “Christmas will
                             be sparse this year,”
                             father spoke,
                             too low to hear,
                             so we canned jams
                             baked some bread,
                             to give to others,
                             their tummies fed…

                             searched through closets
                             picked out toys
                             choosing books for
                             girls and boys
                             each child looking
                             for a gift
                             that would give
                             a smile and lift

                             wrapping paper
                             and ribboned ties
                             favored toys
                             now wished goodbye
                             games and bears
                             books and clothes
                             learning lessons
                             heaven knows.

                             “No Santa, brother,”
                             the sister said,
                             but habit wore,
                             so just before bed,
                             stockings were hung
                             with greatest care,
                             though no wish
                             for Santa’s fare…

                             In the morn
                             we woke in light
                             of Santa’s visit
                             from the night
                             surprise and glee
                             filled the air,
                             as presents lay
                             about, everywhere.

                             “How did Santa
                             pull it off?”
                             Papa hid
                             behind a cough
                             Mama shied
                             behind her smile
                             seems Santa was watching
                             all the while…

                             that little ones
                             might learn the joy
                             through sleight of hand
                             to girls and boys,
                             that gifts, and giving
                             are in the heart
                             and love of Christ is
                             Christmas’ start.

A keeper, Karilea, oh yes, a keeper.

I love the poem and the photo.  I remember those old black and white pictures of Christmas when I was but a little girl.

Thanks again for sharing your Christmas spirit.
