To say he was old
Is to lie
For his age is unknown
He walked long before there was time
And walks still

The old man told me of him
And of how he stole dreams from you
And left you barren in your sleep
Unable to see the wheel or the ways of it
When you awoke.

I laughed inside
Unable to think of anything but metaphor
For the story being told
Until crooked finger aged with bend
From broken logs and arthritis pointed
To the small bag sealed on his belt.

“I captured him.”
He said in a low voice
“After many nights of following
I caught him off guard and imprisoned him here.”

“He escaped last night through one of my dreams
And the world now is again his to roam.”

“What does that mean?”
I asked still not believing legends were more
Than the primitive way to explain what had no place
In a language of spirits or drums.

“I am too old to catch him.”

“He will now steal the world of dreams
and man will become darker
in his savage journey of revenge
intolerant of his neighbor
until eventually all hope will end.”

I shivered in spite of myself
And left as he closed his eyes
Muttering

“you will see him and know.”
“then you will cry at your own screams demise.”

Two days later
It arrived…
A brown leather bag covered in beads
And a note

“Beware your dreams my friend.”
“Guard close your sleep and study the stones inside”

“If we are lucky you will know and capture him.”

.........
That was many years ago
And many dream past
Now…

To say he is old is to lie
For his age is unknown
But I grow older
And my dreams weaker in their hold.
...........
and in the moon of popping trees the buffalo came. It's white head was in mine and its breath warm against my skin. It spoke in a language I could not repeat, but understood, as it told me I should dance on the circle and give my dreams to the people that they too might know of these changes, these people who would come and destroy the land and this the one people.

I awoke with a fever and crawled out onto the snow
where the cold numbed the pain of all I had seen.

I would have been better there had my heart frozen in the free rather than now have it frozen with this dream.

You already know
how I feel about this
because you know how I read you
all the time...

but I know Midnitesun
will be grateful for this.

'still not believing legends were more

In the telling you will open many eyes to the ways of the one people~

'and in the moon of popping trees the buffalo came. It's white head was in mine and its breath warm against my skin. So symbolic is this buffalo ... but you would know that by now~

This is just wonderful my friend~

I have someone special to share it with~
Thank you~

I am truly at a loss, Ron.  I was held captive by your words, not wanting to let go, knowing it would end, but hoping the scroll would allow just a little more time with your mind...your amazing mind.

I am so glad to know you through your words, my friend.

Oh my, Ron. You've wrapped me up tightly in a warm buffalo blankie with this one. I will treasure this one forever in my favorites library. What a wonderfully written spiritual and intellectual piece.

I read this last night, alone in my room, and found it so chilling I could not reply. I'm not sure I understand completely of what you write, but the emotion within it is astounding.

You seem to wrap yourself around the skin of the reader, and give us goosebumps ron. truly a wordsmith.

But isn't that what life is about..second chances, and new beginnings, clean slates, starting over, trying new things. Don't give up! Never give up. Life is and can be a very good thing! This write was so heart-wrenching. :'(
