Alia Iacta Est...

That fateful day upon the dark pavement, still
warming as the sun climbed between moderately
tall buildings of another era. Pigeons swirled
overhead,  awaiting a roost.  A sentinel,
repose of learning..ominously standing between
mottled brick and clear glass.

Waiting for a moment to arrive, one that would
shatter the world around, as shots would be
heard countless times in the minds of innocents
lining an avenue, awaiting a fleeting glimpse
of greatness...young, vibrant and so very alive.

The classroom door opening suddenly as images of latin
nobles swirled through young minds.  A period
of composing, interpreting and memorizing
a foreign tongue...one difficult to remember...
Except for three words...”Alia, Iacta, Est”...
Oh,  how I loved Caesar and Nero...and the
Roman's of such grandeur.

For on that moment of the door suddenly
swinging ajar, the hushed and whispered
lips of a pale face,   wondering and
worried eyes of youth staring through
the blackboard....life changed as a
shake of bones cast the die...

I cringed, once I knew...I cried, once
I could feel....I anguished, once I
could stand and take a leaden step
toward a door that led to home...

The doors locked early,  a flag hanging
limp at half mast on that day, so
far away, long ago when a giant fell.
I shall never forget that image...nor
shall I ever forget “Alia, Iacta, Est"...

The Die Is Cast....

Magnus~
Oh my ... this is utterly chilling with remember~
I recall with heart touching clarity exactly where I was that moment ... holding my first born son ... only 23 days old in my arms ... and the shock and disbelief at the assasination of my President~

I remember that in college I wasn't old enough to vote when JFK was elected ... but worked diligently to see that he was.
Our motto was, "You elect him ... we'll re-elect him !"
And sadly, it wasn't to be~

Thank you for this ... it will be with me for a long, long time~

(big hugggssssssss) I can't say that I remember, as this happened almost twenty years before I was born, but he truly was a very caring and giving president as I have read in many historical accounts and I too cry envisioning that tragic day! (sad sigh) I send many hugs your way as your memories are of great value to us all, sweet friend, God Bless You, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Barry, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Wow! What a powerful image!  Were you there in my classroom that fateful day?  You reached into my psyche and pulled images of cataclysm from my soul.

Thank you for taking the time to remember.

As an adult visiting Dealy Plaza, I was suddenly a 4th-grader again... listening to words crackling through a PA system that would shock a school into silence. There are moments burned into our memories... you've written this one well.
