The State of Liberty

Her hands are aged and worn by time's harsh ways,
As passing beauty runs its fleeting course,
With ears no longer hearing from passing of the days.
For now, as stone as statue, with lack of force,
To beckon those who need her watchful care,
Still silently she stands and seems the same.
Once, eyes which pierced the freest soul, now stare
Through darkness only lit by former deeds and fame,
Which now by lack of faith and dreams untold
Now drapes her flagless freedom so unfurled,
And leaves free thoughts to barren minds and cold
Who seek to darken light from off the world.
If we would yearn for freedom's liberty,
Then God would blazon hearts of men--"Be free!"
