Cedar Chest

It’s a cold winter day, snow coming down in floating crystals, turning nature
into a beautiful wonderland of snow and ice.
Grabbing a hot cup of chocolate,
I wander up into the old weathered attic.
Up in this old attic,
are memories of the past,
gathering dust and silky cobwebs,
waiting for a new generation
to enter and capture the days of long ago.
Come with me and we’ll journey into the past and capture lost dreams and
undying hopes
that are hidden in the old cedar chest.
On top of silk and lace is a small bundle of letters, wrapped in silky ribbons
of pink.
It’s addressed to a person’s name,
I have never heard, the year 1918.
A faint aroma of sachet still lingers upon this delicate linen paper of pale beige.
On the outside of this envelope,
in bold letters of red, are the words,
Return To Sender Address Unknown.
As I look closely tiny smears of ink cover this envelope of yesterday.
Looking closer I realize they are tears of the past and the pain of yesteryear.
As I open this private story to another I read,
“I’m so sorry, please forgive me. I love you with all my heart.”
“Love...... Then a spattering of long ago tears.
Sitting feeling the pain of this unknown person,
I notice tissue paper encircling a dress made of sequins and lace.
Hidden in the folds of this lovely dress is a fan made
of delicate feathers, sequins and lace.
A dance card left unfilled and droplets of tears of yesterday.
Another dress of white silk, pearls and silky
cream lace, torn to shreds with spatters of rust colored stains.
This mystery of returned letters of pain and a wedding dress
covered with nasty stains of blood.
How do I discover the mysteries held within this old cedar chest?
As I continue my search, I discover an old photo album.
Pictures of smiling faces I do not know.
A young man in a uniform, a young woman holding a baby.
The picture is faded and torn it looks like she is at a railroad station.
She looks like she is crying, the young man kissing the baby,
walking away, waving from the train.
Papers-
A marriage license, a birth certificate and a notice from the war department.
A dagger wrapped in a cloth of black, covered with rust colored stains,
hidden
in the bottom of the old cedar chest.
Hidden within this old tattered cedar chest is a story of
people now gone and of a new generation looking and wondering about the
meaning of the clues in the old cedar chest.

This is a powerful poem. As i was reading it, i can picture being in an attic, going through a cedar chest, and seeing the tear drops on letters. I enjoyed this one

Got to be careful of those cedar chests....dangerous things they are, that can suck you in and make you forget all the bad stuff going on that you ought to be running around madly to get covered so you can get on to the really important stuff that just can't wait......

Bonnie~
You have written the nostalgia of me~

I can wile away the hours exploring the cedar chests I've inherited ... each one holding the tenderest of memories~
Touching, smelling ... reliving~
Thank you for this lovely penning~
I treasure the treasures kept in the safe tuck of cedar~

(big hugggsssssss) God Bless You, sweet friend, I too always get so emotional and my heart easily gets touched when I am at my grandparent's house each summer, and I look into their cedar chests and see beautiful black-and-white Polaroids of my grandpa in uniform, their marriage, with their siblings, in St. Genevieve, dancing at square-dancing clubs, and then see the letters, Gods eyes, my grandma's wedding dress behind glass on the wall, the Westertoren clock, all those precious collectables! (wipes tears) You have deeply brought back so many precious memories with this, sweet friend, God Bless You, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Bonnie, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton
