Pieces of Eight

You told me water was your friend
naked and brown
your hair filled with fire
your eyes made from brown mischief
all the kitchen pans
in the tub with you

Your blanket had a name
constant companion to your fear
it dragged behind you through rooms
into daycare
across the place of dreams
PAKEE
shredded and covered with stories
that you had no time to tell

From the magic place
you learned secrets
of how to talk to animals
of where to find the beginning of a path
across the meadow
of how to write backwards and upside down
the name    your name

You scratched out a quiz with each breath
asking why and why and why again
until even the answers grew questions
and I caught your curiosity
and carry it to this day
with your glaze and turn of cheek

Sing it again mommy
read me   tell me the story of how
listen to the sound the sunset makes
naming shadows
tell me again about why
the coyote knows me
and cries my name across the years

Tell me sing me why we die
and I’ll tell you what infinity is
it is the end and a beginning of the spell
MICHELLE

Thank you Martie, for posting this for Michelle, and by way of doing so, letting us know that you and yours are OK through the consumption of "our" state.

Martie:

Tell me sing me why we die
and I’ll tell you what infinity is
it is the end and a beginning of the spell

What a beautiful mother you are
My God . . . look at what you have
written . . .
infinity is the end and beginning of a spell . . .

Martie?  she is smiling as am I
because through this amazing selfless
outpouring of your soul and her own,
you have shown me what it truly means
to be a mother and a woman. The both of you . . .  one of a kind and that
infinity?  *smile*  soon . . .

Happy Birthday to a special girl
and much love to one beautiful woman
I could only pray to have one inch of
your strength in my blood and hope to be half of the mother to my son as you have been and are

I shouldn't have read this in my office. Now I have to close the door for a while....

This is one of the sweetest poems I have ever read....simple but complex, gentle but so deeply loving. Beautiful Martie, simply beautiful.

I always say, one day I will be able to read these poems of Michelle and not cry...but it just ocurred to me that wont ever happen, because you write her so enchantingly, that we see her, feel her, know her, and thru you, love her.
And so on her birthday and anytime you write of her..we receive the gift.

Thank you for that.

You're the color of the sky reflected in each store-front window pane ...
You're the whispering and the sighing of my tires in the rain.

I felt that one so deeply, and thank you for letting me know her, what a treasure.

Only the purest hearted poet could say this, like this...Organizing pain into such beauty...I am overwhelemed with the emotional images...I do not know what God you believe in, but if I did, I would thank  it for blessing you with this gift.

Ahh Martie this is wonderful. You made me see my own little girl as she is now. She drags blankie everywhere...and answering one question always fills her with 10 more. This is so sweet and yet so sad too. Made me misty eyed. Thank-you for sharing this deepest part of your heart.
