This is dedicated to all the rude shoppers
at my Walmart last evening.

"Attention Walmart shoppers, please mind your manners."

Good Manners and Apple Pie

Can you smell Mama’s apple pie
cooling on the sill?

Mama said she baked that one
for the new family.

“It’s just good manners to make
them feel at home.”

No one could resist Mama’s apple...
a slice of pie and glass of whole milk-
the kind that sticks to the
sides of the glass.

I licked my lips just
thinking ‘bout her pie.

Daddy always said Mama’s apple needed
“no modes or cheddar” it could stand
by its lonesome.

That afternoon,
Mama put on her pretty
church dress, white gloves, and hat.
She must have been in a good mood
that day ‘cause she let
me try pink on my lips.

Carefully, she held her pie as we walk...
Seems like two or three times she
reminded me to mind my manners.

Boy, Mama, that pie sure smells good.

She just smiled.
Daddy said she couldn’t take a compliment.

Soon we stood in their breezeway,
Mama handing her apple pie to Mrs. Colletti
with a “Welcome to the neighborhood.”

I thought then I would always
remember the warm feeling
I felt that day...
warmer than Mama’s apple
fresh out of the oven.

Thirty five years later,
I haven’t forgotten.

Do you remember?

Listening to every heart

That's how I was brought up -
we welcomed the new neighbors - we didn't need
a city sponsored "Welcome Wagon" hostess to do it -
we just did it.

Then at Christmas, [because it was CA and
fruit was around ALL season] our kitchen
would be full of jars - we'd even keep the
baby food jars - to make up small baskets of banana
bread and jams and jellies, marmalades and wonderful
scents of other foods to
give to our neighbors and friends for the
holidays - because Mom said "People don't know
the real stuff anymore..."

But our neighbors did - and looked forward
to every Christmas!

Thank you for this memory...

where's my pen?

(big hugggssssssssss) Oh Patricia, I never grew up during those golden years but those people in stores are so much more rude nowadays overall! (sad sigh) I wish there could be more politeness like then, sweet friend, you reminded me there's still hope, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Patricia, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

Even now, my Mom still makes things for her neighbors. They live in the city, but she always fixes baskets of her homemade "goodies", she calls them. She does this on holidays, birthdays, and in fact, all through the year.

This was so neat. Loved it!!!Took me back to times when you could leave your front door open at night, and just lock the screen door. The night cool, and the breezes that came through the house that made you sleep better. Wow..been a long time. Thanks for the memories. This also reminded me of pot- luck dinners at church. Yummy!!!
Love,
Terri~

I'm not sure the shoppers in Walmart will listen... but I did... and this brought back so many memories of times and places where no one remained strangers. *S* Enjoyed! *S*
