You’d made your Gophers champions; For the 80 Olympic squad
You chose a team of players you knew, which wasn’t so very odd
You created winners, motivated with some methods not nice
And brought a country together to watch a miracle on ice.

You told them they were born to be there, made sure that each man believed
But as they skated in victory, you quietly took your leave
For this was the team’s moment of glory and you would not detract
Your only medals were won as coach; but that didn’t mean you lacked.

You had been the very last man cut from the 60 golden team
In sixty-four and sixty-eight, you did not attain your dream
But three collegiate championships are credited to you
Four teams of the mighty NHL sought your innovative view.

The Olympics beckoned you once again, with silver the reward
Still, you did not think of slowing down, but just kept pushing hard
Benefit dinners, golf, scouting reports, then off in broad daylight
Only to meet your final destiny on way to catch a flight.

Today, the lakes of Minnesota overflow their banks with tears
We thank you for a miracle that still glows after all these years.

In memory of Herb Brooks 1937-2003

If you're still around when I go, can you write a eulogy for me! Mind you, it may not be as interesting as this one, but I'll be smiling down (or up?) at you!

You should send this off to his family. A wonderful tribute poem, Dear Belle of the South! Full of heart and soul!

Suthern, when you pay tribute to anyone or anything the beauty of your heart always shines so brightly.  This was a wonderful tribute to yet another great person in our history this year that has gone away.  Well done indeed, and your rhyme - perfect! Oh, and such a pretty new picture, lovely!

nakdthoughts:  I know I’ll never forget him… the worst fight I ever had with my ex was over me wanting to watch the gold medal game in 1980! (Herb and the boys were better company. LOL) Thank you very much! *S*

Martie: If there’s an ice rink, he probably is. *S* Thank you very much… he meant a lot to me! *S*

I read this poem at the exact minute you posted it -- peeking in here and hit Refresh...poof, there it was....but didn't answer because I wanted to read it again before I did....and almost forgot to answer at all.

You have a heart of gold, you know that, don't you? It really shows in this one, if folks on that side of things are aware of what folks on this side are up to, you can bet he's smiling.

Wasn't he something?
And you didn't have to be a hockey fan to see that.
I'm glad I had a chance to at least watch.
Thanks for the tribute.

Ruth, this is such a beautiful tribute. You really do have a lot of talent, my friend. You can write on any subject and make it beautiful.

How are you doing? Hope you're better now and not so sore from your fall.

With love and hugs,
Ethel
