The clear-throated weekend girl on summer radio greets us good morning, lying face-upwards on steady, reassuring mahogany. Her shoulder is propped on a half-dusted spine of californian recipes from the mid-seventies, pages hibernating in a hardback duvet, but protecting her from crackle or stammer. Beside breakfasting kitchen windows, we hear her glide in, her voice catching a ride on three pure bars of sharp-edged white light from the garden. These anaemic silhouettes are sizzling interstates for a sun high on roasted energies, refreshed after its very own slumber party last night (a display of samba sunset held daily, in honour of repeated survival). The hangover from a beachy pink just ten miles east of here is done with, swept away by sea-stars, night-watchmen of ocean spray. Like heavenly wands of matt-finished crystal, soft clear beams weave through breeze-shivered blinds like starships in morning mist. Flimsy shutters rest on the wall for a breather. With every scrape of the sideboard they murmur robotic whispers, like brittle pensioners shaking tins for charity. The plastic visors tickle tidy coats of paint and settle comfortably against reflective panes of glass, for the wind is a hundred-mile drive from here. Billowing gales take two stops for gas in this weather, even with an early start.

“…welcome to a scorching weekend, folks….”

Her crisp words resonate the woodgrain of a tabletop. Turned over once with a gentle Saturday sigh, she is calmed towards sleep - rolled back to bed - by a lullabied flick of the fingertip on a volume-switch.

We hop on four wheels and head to the beach, hoping this weekend is a long one.

Different, but engaging...  definitely worthy of a few re-reads to let the strong imagery cohere the scene descrbied.
