The brushstrokes show none of the pain.
The lines, no grief.
The lies hidden in the colors,
Are only known from history

The stories shown are false
Happiness is untrue
The time not wanted to be remember by the despair,
But by the happiness not there.

The artist didn’t want to show sadness
Only the joy
So he made his art happy
Even if all he saw was pain.

The smiling of his subjects
And happiness of their surroundings
Are now realized not as the truth
But as his desires

The artist was not wrong
But he was only in a secret world
Known only in his mind
A world known as fantasy.

(A little background: I was in Idaho all last week, and the local newspaper of where I was the Argus... My cousin and I were driving past a convenience store, and a sign said "The Argus is wrong". When my cousin read it, I thought he said, "The artist is wrong". So I started to contemplate this, and then realized what he had said. The thought of that never left my mind. And then I saw this piece of art on the Antiques Road Show. It was painted during the civil war and it was of wounded confederates laughing and smiling have a good time.. It was a great piece.. And it sparked more inspiration.. And this came outta my mind! Hope you like it! )

I do like it -- an original concept with a good dose of truth in a lot of cases...  Made me think of the parallel of photography -- how the subjects always "smile and say cheese", often times regardless of how they're really feeling at the moment...  not always the most honest art form...
Thanks for the thought-triggers...

An excellent poem, and I'm glad to hear where the inspiration came from -- too many people don't share..... I'm glad to know that somebody else gets their starts from unusual places, and takes 'em wherever they'll go!

Yes, an artist has the ability to cover up, or reveal in full, what is real, or what is fantasy...and sometimes fantasy makes for great reality...

Excellent write!
