You called
to leave your latest story;
7AM,
your voice broken down
into magnetic memory,
still drunk on wine
and pheromones,
the scent of a new man,
the taste
of a single moment in your life.
I am used to this by now,
phone machine messages
left at any hour,
except when you think I might be home.
I used to just delete them
when I heard your voice;
I never get to tell you that.
I don't even have your number,
don't even know where you live
except it has to be a city,
where else could you find
all the pretty men you prattle on about.
Now I listen,
and separate the data from my heart.
It's a start I think
to healing the deep rip inside my soul;
it always seems you call
when you have just returned
to the edge of your control,
and have already flushed
whoever "him" had been.
I wonder,
if you understand the differences
between love and simple biochemistry;
you
for whom control of your surroundings
is paramount,
yet you are a slave
to the most elemental molecules
lighting up your brain,
and other nervous system sets
further south of that.
Do you ever connect the dots
that make the lines
that sketch
the self-inflicted drama of your life,
or is it really just a child's toy
that sets the boundaries by which you live?
Can you give a thought,
ever,
to the lives you toss away
when the etching of your momentary sketch
is ripped apart?

Incredibly good write.
Some people never do understand the impact this behavior has on those who really care.
A sad but excellent write, dear icebox.

Loved the title..and loved the write.
