Father..
What might one derive from this most simple
two syllable word, one which sounds similar
to “farther”.   Or the hurried, excited shriek
of a child running....  yelling “Daddy, Daddy,
Daddy”... latching onto a pants leg...not
letting go.

Blessed by a gift, a treasure...more priceless
than the world’s bullion..being eternally
called a name not given by one’s birth,
though by birth...it is given...Black and
white upon the certificate....stating
coldly who is the “Father” of a tiny,
squirming, pink, thrilling child...

“I am”..I say proudly, with a tear welling
smartly.  I am the father....stammering
and blubbering as a moment overwhelms
an otherwise unflappable, tougher than
nails male...

I am, from the moment of conception to now
and beyond now....even past that time of my
passing....I am...  I am a father, the father,
her father, his father, their father.

Through each tough decision, each cough,
scrape, bump, moment of need.  Even the day when
my child may, in anger lash out...hating me
for some gut wrenching decision that
was made from love and commitment,
not a desire to hurt or control.

I hope they never forget who I am.  And
I still want to be “Daddy” forever.

I would have it no other way....

To conceive a child makes a man a father, but to write of fatherhood as you have just done, makes you a DADDY!

May your DADDY's DAY be extra special!

May your Father's day be a great one.
You are a true Daddy! Its good to know that at least two of those exist (my daddy first).
God bless you

Always, Alyssa

And you will be, of course....that's built into a man permanently, or it's something added only with the greatest care and effort. You're type number one, for sure.

Barry,

This is lovely.  Your children are very fortunate to have you...just as you are fortunate to have them.  And yes, I know that stuff...my 12 year old is going through that "you are a freak, mom" stage.  It passes.  My son is 20 and he is so proud that I am his mother...and I am so proud of him.  Mutual, unconditional love...it is awesome.  My four year old, well, she is still at that age that she thinks the sun rises and sets in me.  It is great.  OK, I guess I could ramble on forever about the kids...you started it with this beautiful write...Remember that! LOL

What a responsibility... But what a blessing! Have a happy Father's Day!

Barry, I love this. It sounds just like
something my Daddy would feel. Even though he
doesn't write poetry, he has said so, in so many
words. And, dear Barry, I'm thinking you are,
and will forever be, their Daddy,  just
as no matter how old I get, my Father is always going
to be my Daddy...and I'm always proud to say so!!

Hugs
Ethel

Very touching write Barry. I enjoyed this perspective. As a Mom, it's hard to understand how a Father feels. Thank you for sharing this.
