state of confusion

Lineage

My hands are my grandmother’s –
sun-aged, small,
with nails that make a point.

These are restless fingers,
they touch ceaselessly,
create braillist memories
and whittle away at clutter
over what makes a keepsake.

This handheld mirror does reflect
perfectly, but shadows mask
true age - I keep my curtains
closed against the light.

This voice is hers as well,
a gift for song.
I played this borrowed instrument
until a man sewed my vocal chords,
shut out the songstress.

These mannerisms: my mother’s –
except more headstrong, a magnified
copy. The nag to my children,
the overly-hard critic of my lover –
my mother times four.

My fears are my own flaws to bear –
of poverty, of abandonment
of success,
and a tendency toward flight.

No place is ever quite home.
I’ve made an impossible
God out of the sea,
a spirit unforgiving
of my leaving.

One day I’ll return
to worship,
find the ghosts of me.

Marge,

thank you kindly, gal! This was one of those challenge things - to write something honest about yourself. Not sure it's quite there, yet. Digging deep doesn't come easy!

Hope things are going wonderful for you in your neck of the woods!

Sey - thank you very much!

Thanks Maggie!
