This is in response to today's headlines that some Marines (who have been in the ME over 8 months already) may be punished for grumbling about their stay in Iraq being extended.

Dear Mr President:

You are the designated
Commander in Chief.

Let them speak,
freely.
Let the tired soldiers
grumble freely.
For all they are asking
is to go home as you promised,
to speak freely.
They have offered their lives
daily for nearly a year
in exchange
for other people's freedoms to do
just that, speak freely.

Grumbling is not treasonous,
not seditious,
and in no way threatens
the survival of The Unites States of America.

It bothers me greatly
to read in the news
they may suffer additional consequences
for grumbling and complaining,
for asking to go home.

So if they cannot speak freely,
what exactly are they
asked to die for?

"So if they cannot speak freely,

Maybe we could send him a carrier cricket with the message!!  Perfect Kacy, but then all your duets with Jiminy are!!

Thanks, Raph.
Of course, I sent this one to the President.
And no doubt, I'll receive a pre-chewed-on standard reply.
And no, it wasn't sent anonymously, but included my name, address, and email address.

Duncan, you popped in while I was typing.
Thanks!
I just cannot believe the way we abuse such a basic freedom.

FYI, to contact The White House:

Maybe you'll get lucky and get a personal response from Bush himself. I here he's moved up from crayons to pencils now. The intelligence I'm basing this on is "darn good."

ROTFL at that reply, Raph.
Hmmm, maybe we need to get together and send him indelible ink pens and permanent markers?

I understand why a civilian would feel this way, absolutely, but I believe a servicemember would have to consider there desire to continue on as a member of the military...as this can affect his ratings to his superiors...you would have to understand the hierarchy of the military to understand if you piss the man in power over you off you will not be promoted at the proper time...even in civilian life ill spoken words can doom a career...
I don't think the issue is freedom of speech...it is respect for superiors...but I believe that soldiers are always allowed to grumble among themselves...
this is a sad situation...one of the reasons Rumsfield wanted to send so few troops over there is because the military has been downsizing for the past twenty years and there are not enough to go around...so unfortunately a burden is placed on the smaller numbers...I believe that the burdens should be placed on the people of Iraqi....police and military forces should be developed within the Iraqi nation...also a reconciliation with the UN so they could take over some of the responsibilities...James
