I don't always write poetry
sometimes I mine it
like cheap ore,
hidden,
under some other fertile land
for which I stole the mineral rights
when I was young;
like questions no one wanted asked,
images out of focus
even when they're clear.
I have no fear of old perverted thoughts,
or were they merely thoughtful perversions,
lofty versions of an intellect
barely old enough to wear long pants?
Sometimes
I'll take a chance,
stare down fear
to taste again the moldy crusts of guilt
so thoroughly chewed before,
with all the tasty parts stripped off,
buried somewhere near.
I don't write poetry,
I just define it
when the winds blow
the edges free of sediment and dust.
Like I'm on a dig
an archaeologist stealing from the dead;
I break into the tombs
of thoughts enshrined by soft reflections
of my younger self.
I'm reminded of the foolishness
of youth,
and I'm not too proud
to shed a tear
when I can not find a rhyme.

Wonderful comparison to archeology...trowelling through the layers of thought to uncover buried words and phrases..

Is good to recognize a missing muse, I think they get a kick out of the struggle. Yes, I did enjoy this poem and your thoughts, as always.
