Footsteps in the dark echo their hollow sound
empty of commitment and uncertain in their quest
but on the edge of restlessness deep imprints in the sand
depict the useless wanderings of the young and innocent.

A momentary insight like the taste of coffee beans
stirs to wakefulness the numbness of a mind,
suspends between realities the certainties of sane,
and cracks the foundation on which a life is built.

Little puppets all are we to believe, perchance to feel,
the greatness of the universe is applicable to now
when decreed is our ordeal to love and yet to lose,
to seek and not to find, and to battle to survive.

By the light of the moon I dream a timeless dream
till the burning truth draws moisture from the earth,
turns to brittle parchment the blueprints of my youth
and leaves me as a leaf blown from a tall oak tree.

And how the wind of change blows hot, cold, in and out,
On the ground or in the air where I go to hibernate
and nibble on the tasty bits of how a life should be
till strengthened I step out into the universe of fools,
a puppet with no string dressed as a human being!

Dang, Helen, this is one I'll keep in the library. It's one that stimulates the brainwaves.

yes, that java jumping in my body does the trick

Thanks, Midnitesun - to be in a library is an honour.

And passing shadows, thanks so much for reading ... and "agreeing".
