I paused at the point
of putting food in my mouth

that point that everyone else
at the table will notice

it wasn't the meat
no
it was the fork

the fancy fork
the silverware my grandmother
brings out for special occasions

this was a special occasion
this was all occasions

this was the last time seeing
my grandfather lean back in his chair
after a wonderful meal
with the bay window behind him

king of the sun-strewn valley of farms
that were his background

of the fleet of soft battleships
majestic in the sky

but he would gaze out of this painting
looking at HIS favorite view

his wife
who had filled all our bellies with
contented musings
and little smiles
at my grandfather's
tired jokes

there will be more of these meals
just not
with the glory of all those colors
those quiet people bringing in the hay
framing
a contented man

ohh.. Thats so sad. Is it true?

I said I'm going to buy a gun and start a war,
If you can tell me something worth fighting for

heritage doesn't live in a house -- but finds it's home in the words we pass on...eh?

LOL @ "two forks in a row".
Again (as I said in wranx' thread)...all this from a fork!
Enjoyed the read and the portrait Brian.  Very different perspectives from both of you.

Brian, I'm so glad that there will be more of these excellent meals. What a good story...you had us there sitting around the table, Brian.

Bri . .
what a beautiful memory you have brought here for me to see
LOVE . . . exactly what it is meant to be
If this write is indeed a memorie
I am terribly sorry
Know that he is smiling still
at you and at her . . .

Wow....I remember my grandparents moving from their farm to a small house in town. Never again could we play in the rows of corn or skate on the frozen pond.

Thanks for the bittersweet memories.

Fantastic bri and sad, homes house more than people or things they house memories that can't be boxed and moved..
as an aside did you know the roman catholic church initially tried to ban the fork because of its resemblance to the demon's pitchfork? Of course the usage of the fork became so widespread by the rich that the church had to let it slide. That useless piece of  information was loosened by, Raph's insomnia, Isn't it time you slept?..

What a wonderful write.
So well done, the description of loss and of loved ones changing and moving on from our lives.  Embraced me. TD

This is great!!!

I spent a lot of time when I was young with people whose language was conveyed at least 40% with the hands.  Somehow, a fork was always more effective in discussion than a knife.  The knife almost always was threatening, while the fork, most of the time, simply added a special emphasis to the point being made.

Later, in reading history, I learned that Henry II had to ban the fork for a while because his barons would get drunk and then try pronging out each other's eyeballs.
