Listening to every heart

How one wilts
during the rise of sun, as
July days take one to the sweat
of death, just to measure
temperance

Ahh, but you survived, you did,
walking in from the fields
with a worn-out smile, wearing your
overalls and dirt

Knowing you’d done right
as just days before, you had plowed
the 40, where milo was put safe,
as our ears of corn welcomed
that splendid storm
of last week.

How weather changes
in the Kansas skies…
lying low until our sun begins its decline
then frightening our nights
with thunderous celebration

Whatever might come in our years,
will anything ever make us cower
like the thunder of a storm?

Whatever else,
my love, might render
a swollen night of fear, into
something that we would run from?

I cannot even bear to think of anything
worse.

Watch with me, my love,
the fireflies…

then lift the candle
to the wind
and let the light
flicker in flight.

This is just way too cool
Beautiful!

You know reading this really makes me wonder how they actually withstood the elements during those days.  I can't imagine not being able to hide from thunder, lightning, and the like in a safe brick house.  See, you are getting me to think even at this late hour so you know you did your job.

you write of Kansas "then" in such a way...
that I KNOW you once walked those plains long before you did those California shores.

Well ... OK ... but you have to wash it first.

bittersweet write, the ending made me think of two people dying together as a tornado rips through their home, a sad thought fitting for a stormy day today
