You never knew me,
standing in the distance
with dreaming eyes.

You never saw me, as I
freckled a blush at the thought of
just “hello”.

You never heard me say your
name softly under my buck toothed
breath, afraid you would hear.

You never touched me, though
the touch of your presence was
so profound, still with me through
forty plus years.

I searched for you through that black
and white screen of Today, countless
times sitting, staring, hoping...
Heartbroken, a tear falling.

Yet,  still dreaming of
a first kiss that never grazed young
lips...So shy was I...

I still see you there, that lovely dress
and long brown hair....I try to remember
more of you.  The years have glazed
the memory, the sight once seen.

Had you known me,  would you have
loved as deep as I?  Could you have sat
before that screen, staring into a world of
blank faces, hoping to glimpse the sight
of me?

Could you love me as I love you
still, to this day...

Do you?

I think we all remember our first love.
My first love was a safty guard at school.
That year he broke his arm so he was in a sling. It was winter time and his hand was cold and I gave him my mitten to keep his hand warm.I wonder if he still remembers that act of love on my part?
Good one.

Oh goodness, Barry.  I had to read this when I was already in one of those nostalgic moods. Now I remember that chunky boy I liked in high school who gave me trouble in Algebra class...shoot, I wonder what happened to him...LOL

Wonderful write, Barry, as usual.

A young man's reminisce as he gazes in the mirror...

somewhere, some woman just turned her head,
and felt her ears burning a little, as her
heart thumped a wee bit faster...

You have me traipsing down my own memory lane. When I was 12, I had the biggest crush on a particular boy who was 2 years older than I was. When he asked me to a dance, I almost fainted with joy! During a wild dance, he knocked my nose and gave me a serious nosebleed. When we got back on the dance floor, he stepped on my brand new shoes and broke the strap. On our walk home in sub-zero weather, I fell down a hill and broke through the ice in a pond. He then walked me to a laundromat and put my new winter boots in the dryer as well as my new woolen coat! Need I say more?!?

Oh, yes, one more thing, when he went to kiss me goodnight, he missed my lips (He was 6'5" tall) and planted one on my eye and my eyelashes got pushed into my eye! I started to cry and my Dad came to the door , took one look at me crying, wearing a shrunken, disheveled coat that looked like I had been doing more than dancing, and demanded some answers from the poor guy! Later my Mom  flipped out over my ruined coat, boots, and shoes! It's a wonder that I ever dated again!

Sorry, that I got so long-winded! I really did enjoy your poem, Barry!

Luvs 'n hugs,
Linda

This reminds me of a song entitled: What might Have been?

Great wisdom I got from your poem,it told me to love at the moment before the moment or chance is gone!

Very beautiful poem, brings back a lot of memories.  Cherish each moment, for you never know when it will be gone forever.

Magnus...Ah, yes, the blush of first love. We always remember the one that capitivated our heart for the very first time. I remember meeting a young man who came to a dance at Mountain Park. There was a soul-connection between this sailor and this land-lubber. He hitchiked around 30 miles just to see me; but, alas, my neighbor didn't recognize my last name and told him no one lived there by that name. I never saw him, again. But I often thought, what if... ***Ivy Rose
