I'm gear grinding, double clutching peddle to the metal, on my way home

with 18 wheels singing on the hyway,cb buddies chatting

and country singers on the radio singing tear jerkers through the nite

it's been many days on the road and away from you my darlin and I'm on my way home

with detours and traffic lights and smoky hiding out of sight

and 4 wheelers just touring and through town and up mountains keeps me gearing down

but just down the hywy and around a few bends and up the hyway a litl piece it will all end

I will be home with you darlin

Very nostalgic for me.

My father drove long haul for almost thirty years. Old Whites and double stick Macs in the early years and ended up with Peterbuilts that looked like spaceships inside.

I often rode with him when I was free to help load or unload.  Later, I stood "shape" on the 1 & 9 circle by E-Port to pick up quick cash unloading. Truck stops back then often were like the old wild west; transporters moving contraband goods or people, who's got "rights" to cover a trip, "ladies" of various persuasions (and prices), cribbing a log book to make it fit the clock and the odometers, bounty hunters checking riders for a skipper, who knows an off route to by-pass the scales, knowing at a glance who was drunk, stoned, bennied up, crazy, hiding or just wired on gallons of coffee. All before I was 15.

You just brought it back to me in a rush.  Thank you.

This touched me! I've a grandson who drives an eighteen wheeler for FedEx, He's so very much in love with his wife! I almost heard his voice, to her, in this terrific write!

This truly shows the sensitive and tender nature of a rugged guy! A rarity!

You've revealed your trueness, Q~
I enjoyed this!

Thanks and Blessings!

This reminds me a bit of that song "Eighteen wheels and a dozen roses"... I like this picture you share with us of the road... and the home-longings. *S*

I enjoyed the feel of this one, and the flow. I've had so many relatives that are truckers, it's like a family reunion to read it.

Hi GjQ.
Good one. My son drives a truck for a living and drives a truck just to get around.
Trucks must be in the blood.
Thanks for sharing your words of poetry.
Bon-Bon
