As a new member, I'd like to know what the poets who visit this forum think about the role of poets in the post-modern society. It's my feeling that the last gasp of poetry as a literary force in our age was the Beat Movement of Ginsberg, Ferlinghetti, and that brave crowd. What will it take for poetry to take its rightful place as the highest form of verbal expression in the eyes of the masses? |

I don't believe the future of poetry is dark. In one month, 200 people have found, and posted, poetry in this forum. If you see the statistics of people that access poetry sites (Passions included), it amounts to thousands a day! Here in Phoenix, coffeehouses are attracting customers with poetry readings! "Shakespeare in Love" (by the ultimate poet) won an Academy Award! Poetry is alive and well...thank God! Not sure I'm ready for the life of a rebel poet!  Welcome to the group, by the way. Thanks for your reply. I've been writing for most of my 33 years, but I have always gone the solitary road. I admire poets and writers who can warm their creative hands at the fires of others. Perhaps the Internet is the coffee house of the future, eh? I welcome the 'poet as rebel' role...Rimbaud, Burroughs, etc... I want a movement--something tangible--in my lifetime. I hope there is a future for us. I stumbled across these forums tonight, and was delighted with what I saw. I work at a gaming company, so I know all about the potential of online communities. I will visit often, if only to reassure myself that there are others out there writing... Thanks for visiting my site too. I went online and found some pics of my favorite writers, and had a very talented web artist at work mold them into a nice montage. Feel free to post a link to Passions in Poetry in my forum. I seriously think that the internet has helped create the rebirth of poetry as a respected art form. Like you, I was almost certain that the Beat Generation may be the last era of respected poetry as art. (I LOVE Ferlinghetti, btw). I think we may be on the edge of what will later be termed "the Net Generation" or something similar. I used to write... have stacks of poetry handwritten or typed with a typewriter, and had all but given it up until I happened on another poetry site where people were posting their original works and commenting on others. And then came Passions. There is a *lot* of talent here and those who are posting seem open to constructive criticism and to learning from each other. I think that sometimes we may appear to be a "mutual admiration society" because we are giving each other so much support. But, that's what makes a community. We care about our art and we are EACH improving our skills. Much of this is publishable material. The future of poetry is anything but bleak. You might think this is going a little overboard, but it feels a bit like history in the making. I mean, like the deVine Miss P said, there simply wouldn't be such fantastic response to this website and others by such talented people if the future of poetry were dark. Thanks for joining us, btw. I only read one of your works so far and remember being very impressed with it. It's way too hard to keep up here.... just too many posts every day. I don't believe poetry will ever be the highest form of verbal expression in the eyes of the masses. We are quite a diverse lot here on this old planet! But I do believe that poetry is again gaining in strength and acceptance as a wonderful form of expression. The internet, of all things, has convinced me of that.
