Joe and I sat on pickle buckets
shucking corn awhile
and talked, well Joe talked
I listened with uncharacteristic calm
He could tell a story,
I’d give him that, if I’d had
a tall glass of iced vodka
I could have leaned back,
leisurely picking at the plump ears
and listened all night

But just when I was figuring out
how to get those little strings
free from between the kernels,
Rita yelled, ‘Get ready boys, here they come’

‘Here they come’, Joe repeated with genuine excitement,
collecting his pile of perfectly stripped corn
along with the few I’d managed to clean to his satisfaction

‘You know how to do dishes Goober?’, he asked, enjoying
the moniker a lot more than I was

‘I think I can handle it, what’s there to know?’, I tried
not to sound annoyed at the question

‘Bet that’s what ya thought about shuckin’ corn’
