I would’ve ordered dessert
but I figured she’d think
I was showing off,
so I paid my check
and left Jean a twenty
under the plate of chicken bones,
just for making me smile.
I was nearly out the door
when I heard her call behind me.

She was fanning herself with the twenty
and talking, just as slow and sweet
as she could, ‘Know what I could use
more than this hon?’

I grinned, feeling my face redden
and matched her drawl, drip for honey drip,
‘What’s that darlin?’

‘A dishwasher’, she smiled,
like she was offering me a get out of jail free card.

Not seeming to notice my face drop,
she began talking faster
and I realized that the place was
filling up with hungry locals.

‘I’d just need ya for tonight sweetie,
Merle walked out, the old drunk,
and the new boy can’t handle a Sunday night
by himself yet.  You’ll be fine, he’s a real nice boy,
he’ll help ya work the machines an all.’

She pressed the twenty into my hand
as she lead me towards the kitchen.
I looked back into the dining room
with a stab of panic, for some way of escape
but only noted the guy she’d called Buddy,
laughing to himself.
He seemed to be getting
quite a kick out of me today.

That's telling a mighty fine story!

Oh Duncan, you did good!

Now get to work, it's only one night
just think, she might hire you on full time
if you're 'really good'

And with a southern twang that would melt butter, she glanced back over her shoulder and said, "jes follow darlin".....
and all he could do was tag along behind her like a puppy....

loved this Duncan, thanks for the smile.
