Many years ago,
before the crush and mindless drain
of time and myriad change,
of lives and cultures
which brought forgetfulness,
I knew the simple life
of touch and take
of live and die,
I held before me freedom's light
as if always it would be in reach;

as all the multi-faceted casts
of thoughts and childhood's church
morality perished one by one, as fibers
dying in a body left to whither in the sun,
the sun of time and age,
I'd cry I'd stop, watch friends deny
the slowly incremental press
of ever unrelenting time.

Now I race before its wind
to feel,
to seize before it's gone,
the truth of living for today
the lust for touching what remains,
I stretch to reach and stay alive
as once I'd been so naturally
and now am left to take by force.

I miss my friends,
those with whom I grew to be a man,
I miss the opportunity
to talk and touch,
to be as free
as once we had allowed ourselves to be;

I scream sometimes silently
into the cold uncaring night
the names of friends,
dead or lost in permutations
of the changes in the times,
we all have left within the times
that passed before our eyes and hearts
never to return.

Your writing is so passionate icebox~
This brought back a lot of faces.
How I miss that place in time
and all the memories it holds~

Only to tuck them away in safe keeping for today.

Your poetry is honestly edged and moves me...and, I do too.

QjQ ~ Thank you for reading.

Carol ~ I am glad you liked it.  Thank you for reading.

BluesSerenade ~ Thank you for reading my poem.  The past is like an old mine; some veins of ore are played out and some rich ones are yet to be uncovered, but always, always exploring the past is dangerous work.  Thank you for your comments and for treating me with kindness. *smile*

Me, too, Icebox. I have had lots of friends
who moved away or who I worked with. When
we go our different ways and promise to
stay in touch, sometimes time and distance
causes more gaps. I miss them sometimes.

I'm so thankful that I have a lot of close
friends who I have been friends with for
many years. I know that they are there for
me no matter what comes or goes. I really
need friends and cherish them.

Well, I didn't mean to say all that, but your poem really got me thinkg.
Thank you for that.
Hugs,
Ethel

From the freedom of youth to restrictions of age ... and I say, "to hell with it - we can be young again!" - but then again, I say a lot of things. As usual, a pleasure to read you!

I may be new,
an inexperienced reader,
and a bad speller
however, after reading this...
I know I'll have beautiful dreams.
Thank you.

garysgirl ~ Thank you for your comments.  I didn’t mean to provoke thought; I hate when that happens!  *Grin*

Honeybunch ~ I always value the things you say.  Thank you for reading my poem.

HorseToBlue ~ I hope your dreams really were good.  I have too often been the source of peoples’ nightmares.  Thank you for reading my poem.

It seems that I have an advantage(?) here.
The "crush and mindless drain" was a way of life in my family. Friends were disposible, or at least it was best that way...Hmmm,
perhaps I should write of this.

wranx ~ I would be honored to have prompted you to write something.  I grew up in circumstances where friendships were mostly acquaintanceships which had not yet ended in betrayal.

Thank you for reading and for your comments.
