Prophet Along U.S 66
By: Noah Eaton
5/17/03

Whether it is still the red wheelbarrow
Beside the white chickens that depends
Or the plums that you left in the icebox
That you just couldn't resist
Or what if that doesn't mean anything at all
Just being Carlos Williams
Or Robert Frost
Even when you don't get lost in the translation

Quiet mornings in the summer rain
I see it all in the koi pond
Watching the sarassa comets
Darting through the opaline depths
Wondering what it feels like to see an old friend
Years from now prospering in those familiar waters
Must feel like some kind of glass blowers dream
Some vision I seek to see...

I'm just a prophet
Along U.S 66
Juggling with my homilectics
I'm just a saint
Standing on the corner of 1st and Main
With the nostalgia flowing out of my veins

Gabriel Garcia Marquez is like a brother to me
Lately I've been engaging in intensive carpentry
Can't wait much or I'll expect little
Can't rest this Sunday, need to paint this part of the world
And I can't tell if I'm beginning to look like my father
Cause few travel down this Mother Road anymore
I've got to get my kicks back in
Seems all some feel is the crack of the whip

Should I have taken that left at Albuquerque
Or make the break for Tucumcari
Cause the neon after a day begins to burn
Perhaps I should come on back to the Meramec Caverns
And watching all those 1966 Lincoln Continentals
And 1969 Camaro 2-Door coupes cruising down these rusty parched backroads
Makes me feel like driving out to the dunes tonight
Maybe it ain't too little too soon to be a Sooner

Cause I'm just a prophet
Along U.S 66
Juggling with my homilectics
I'm just a saint
Standing on the corner of 1st and Main
With the nostalgia flowing out of my veins

I could wing out of any place
Like an El Camino free on the range
We all need to stroll through the shasta lilies
When we get the chance, whenever we please
Gardeners dream bigger dreams than emperors
And I have seen my share of purple along the distance
You've got to learn to dig the earth
And fondle the soil to breathe with mirth

And as long as "twenty five bathtubs are sold
To every Bible"

Hallelujah, come meet me at the Blue Swallow
Wash up, take a splash, you've got to coddle
"There is a Senator among every Colt born"
I feel twice as long-winded from the night before
So won't you hop aboard this silver saddle with plight
Sweet merciful heavens, I feel like Will Rogers tonight
So hop into my matchbox 77 and let's drive...

For I'm just a prophet
Along U.S 66
Juggling with my homilectics
I'm just a saint
Standing on the corner of 1st and Main
With the nostalgia flowing out of my veins
For I'm just a prophet
Along U.S 66
Juggling with my homilectics
I'm just a saint
Standing on the corner of 1st and Main
With the nostalgia flowing out of my veins

Let's go back
Go back
Go back from where we left off...
Let's go back
Go back
Go back from where we left off...

Underneath your clothes, there's an endless story

***Shakira***

Noah...I loved this!  Rt 66 comes right through the city of Glendora California where I live.  Reading this was an amazing adventure!

...you get your kicks on route 66...

You made me homesick for a country that does not exist anymore.

Thank you for sharing this great piece of work.

I've driven long stretches of that concrete carpet -- and it's just like this.... well caught, my friend, well captured.

Noah, the series that James mentioned,
"Route 66", was one of my favorites a long time
ago. Maybe it was reruns I saw? LOL

Anyway, my friend, you took me back to
those scenes like I was right there...
more so than the series did!!

Very good writing, Sir.
Hugs,
Ethel

Ah, Bugs Bunny would be proud for including that line (recently saw one of those episodes, always loved to hear him say that).

I drove the length of old 66 three years ago, unbelievable how the landscape changes.

Quite a lovely thing you have put together here complete with pictures, Noah!

Noah, when I was a teenager, this song was very popular. I always imagined what it would be like to ride along Rt. 66 in a T-Bird convertible, singing this song and also listening to the Beach Boys and taking in all the sights.

I am grateful for the poem, the tour and your fantastic pictures. Thank you, thank you!!  Huggles, Marti
