state of confusion

Penance

Forty dried pinto beans counted
into a wooden bowl,
each one a day of atonement
tied to sustenance.

He’ll need warmth the secular women bring -
firewood at dusk and dawn

and the things they do
with charmed tongues
encourages smoke
to reverse from his chimney
a dirty cleansing stokes the body
while the spirit forges a different story
to tell God.

Later, he’ll ask to be whipped
with torn clothing –
altar rags and rough wool,
and they’ll comply,
humming as they go,
tunes of heresy.

Powerful imagery, Corinne.  Much enjoyed.

All writing comes
by the grace of God.

(chuckling).. perhaps the cynic in me... but this I find in some ways amusing...

strong images here Cor... and it would seem an indictment....
