She said to me,
'I try not to like
you so much, I must admit.' And
I was confounded. And she said
also, 'Its because I'm
afraid if I love you too
much, when I go I'll be sad.' And
I thought her cowardly and
got angry. Her eyes I think
went moist and she said, 'I
can't explain!' in a miserable
voice, and her soft mouth
curled in her sadness. Later
she said, 'You didn't understand me;'
she told me it was no use her trying
not to love me. And she drew in
the air the angle of her feeling,
the progressive line of
passion that grew steadily
higher to show what
had been growing in her these
past weeks about me. I thought
her so intelligent, enveloped
in elegant naivety and
dignity. I told
her to embrace sadness
and that if she really loved me
she would free herself to
feel anything, no matter
what sadness she'd feel when
we became separated. We
must become so. We know
now only a month remains for
us and it adds depth
and outline to our togetherness.
Every moment wasted is precious.
We must not argue. I cry often now,
especially when I think
of the card she gave me on
my birthday; on it was written
simple poetry, but achingly
beautiful, like dew on
leaves; the last line said:
'You're here inside my heart.'

This is so sad. This fear of loving too much is a pathology I would say that is rather frequent ... It's like not wanting to stay in the sunlight for the sadness we feel when the sun sets ....
Beautiful, touching poem.
Hope she will change her mind!
Love, Margherita

"Tears Flow"--an apt title!

Warm hugs,
