Certain songs are ruined now--
all the ones we sang.
Turned into the lie of "us,"
they haunt in reprimand.

Certain smells now hurt like hell--
fresh-cut grass can wound.
Promises unkept from us
refrain the worn-out tune.

Christmas trees are loneliness.
New Year's Eves are memory
of every time I looked for you
and died my lonely death.

The ease of our comaraderie
is replaced by our disgust.
The family dog now growls at you--
she senses my mistrust.

The smile I paint upon my face
is nothing more than mockery.
Can't you see? Can't you see?
There is nothing left of us.

So open up the casket now.
Say a eulogy.
Gaze upon the face of love--
ash to ash and trust to dust.

I know a moth who is going to flit in
and say "ya done good, girl..."

but I'm beating her to it.

...ash to ash, and trust to dust...

As always, excellent write...

"The family dog now growls at you--
she senses my mistrust."

That part made me laugh.  I would have loved for my dog to growl at my ex...lol..or take a leg off....I know....

I'm glad that you're listening. . . because I'm hearing. . .

This should be kept in card form to be flashed by those who have to suffer through relatives asking "When are YOU going to get married?"

Oh... my... lord... How did you capture 8 years in just 4 lines? Maybe I needed a dog... he kept the cat.

ash to ash and trust to dust

Could anyone ever write it better?

I always thought matrimony needed a dirge.  In what other supposedly positive social relationship is success measured by the death of one of the participants?
