Listening to every heart

0 posted 2002-12-27 09:47 AM

‘Twixt & ‘Tween

Time slipped through, again,
as it seems to create

now and then,

a special burst of
wait, remember this…

it was only decades ago,
~ four, to be exact ~
when, stepping out into western light,
warm twelfth month winds
were picking up strands of girl curls

as the winds found me wondering

what does snow feel like…

~*~

Christmas day, 1962
awkward ages spurting greetings,
sharing late morning
shrill giggles over still
pretending,
all of us
an elder child, save one,
with siblings who still believed in good ol’ SC,

all silently wondering
how we would grow up without him…

even if he
was
our daddies…

it was watching the faces of Peggy
and Kathy
and Faye
that I remember tying up the moment
in red ribbon

some voice in the back of my heart saying
“watch, and save this”

as Time cusped the memory between
then, for a
come along
still to be…

that was when brief flickers of tomorrow
edged along the outside of the back of my heart,
with promises,

surprises that Santa had not yet delivered,
and in that moment I chose

as belief dug a large well
and settled in.

~*~

Blink and split-second ahead
just these four decades,

when, stepping out into mid-western light,
cold twelfth month winds
are picking up strands of old-girl curls

as the winds find me wondering

how the sun feels in the cold
of winter,
be still,
as the eagle flies,
and the crows caw,
where cattails stand still
as rays pink
cheeks
while cold creeps into the bones,

and shudder
in the meet
of a new memory.

Hold on.

There’s more
to come
just over there,
on the horizon…

Karilea

"some voice in the back of my heart saying
“watch, and save this”'

I have heard this voice so many times taking precious moment pictures for the memory book...

"be still,
Hold on.

There’s more
to come"

I think if we are still enough, time melts and we can really see across barriers built by minutes.  You have done this in this poem, and reminded me of how precious each heart place is.

I love this poem!

A nice meander between then and now. You have a great way of highlighting individual snippets of life, underscoring the real meaning of the moment. Martie does that too.

Okay...Okay...here's where I throw the pens and paper away...*smiling at you here*
Yes..you do this SO well m'friend.
Those special moments we banked back then...
the ones that go by in the blink of an eye,
tied up  with red velvet ribbon...
YOU are amazing!
~Luv and hugs~

~Time has cast a spell on you,
So you won't ever forget me~

Karilea - dear poetess, there a moments few and far between when I read a poem and the tiny hairs on the back of my neck stand up. This is one of them. I agree with my sister Enchantress....it almost makes me want to throw away my paper and ball points....almost...lol. Cause maybe one day..maybe...I will be able to write like this. Just maybe. hugs & thanks for this awesome write that is going into my library. Chris
