There can be no harmony
with but one voice
with which to sing.
A winter storm is breaking now
raindrops will leave icicle--
over-dripping the facade
of the kind
we hang in South
plastic
purchased from Taiwan--
I watched him hang them carefully
so worried of the new siding--
vinyl under guarantee,
no splitting or a sign of age
for the lifetime
of the company
that skipped town just six months ago.
The lights look pretty
when ya squint
or guzzle down
a half of fifth
whichever might come first.

I stood there on the sidewalk
and
I wondered if a child had worked
for 16 hours everyday
so mine could smile
for half an hour
before they found a better thing
beckoning
from down the street...

I wanted to do something
different
so I said,
"Let's adopt
a family--
I heard there was this program
where
we could help someone in need."

He replied,
"Already done."
I felt the foreshadow of hurt.
But stupid me,
I bit the bait--"What's their name?"
He sneered.
"Their YOURS."

Then the Christmas lights grew dark.

I've come back to this several times, wanting to say something but not sure what.  This 'spirit' of Christmas is all too familiar.  It reads like a dark card.  Really did a nice job of this, Sen.  Hope it's just one of your stories.

Karen, I hope it's just "one of your stories", too.
But, my friend, I don't know why, but today a lot of people's
sad Christmas poems are bringing back bad memories of my
times in past years.
My late husband was my only (child) daughter's stepdad.
Your poem brought back memories of remarks he used to say
about her and what he did for her. BADDDD  memories, Karen,
friend. It also made me think of a reply you made about the
thread I put at one of the discussin forums about
"long distance relationships". I lost your e-mail address when my
computer had to be wiped out yesterday, so that's why I'm
even saying this on here.

Good People..gawd I love you.

This DID NOT HAPPEN...well, not quite this way. This is a dramatization, K? (see, Sharon? even when it IS fiction? they don't believe me anyhow!) But thank you all for the kind e mails and concern...now please, go enjoy your families...or if you're alone? ENJOY YOUR SOLITUDE. (trust me on that one too, k?)

Ho. Ho. Ho. grin.

adopted us...
