You pull trees from the sea,
fractured and brittled by salt,
skeletal woods piling up in sticks
on the shore.

No match made can catch
that waterlogged tinder and timber.
The pines are years submerged.
Their only scent is spume and spray.

The birches' bark is torn like leaves
by a thousand books of rain.
The oaks will never know the soil
or acorn again.

Pull the sponges from the crowns.
Break brown barnacles on stones.
Walls of briney woodlands torn
by black chains and black weights.

A monstrous picture of that force.
"You left me that day."
No need left for those old tugs
cresting ancient waves.

the images your words conjure are dark, layered, and lovely in their depth of vision.

I love this!  Of all the poems I've read in the last several days, this one is my very favorite. It touches me like no other has.

Enjoyed greatly!

Thanks, everyone. Something that just flew out of me, in measured cadence.
