I used to scoff concepts
like self-awareness
and personal growth,
dismissing them as
hyped-up buzz words
that unnecessarily
complicate living

I might have felt like
an overhead bridge that
no one cares enough about,
preferring to jaywalk instead

Or I might have been more like
an omnipresent thorn,
who merrily causes people
to bleed away their self-worth

But I was certainly
a restless digger
who worked hard
at unearthing his self,
which was imprisoned
behind a cheery facade, cautiously
nurtured by the guardian devils
of Insecurity and Perplexity

Having embraced Adulthood,
I ditch the need to be
a wishy-washy snake
or to cultivate myself to be
a pretentious onion

I am now a fan of such buzz words

Yes, but you can still jaywalk sometimes and get to the same destination.

Liked this poem very much. Spiritual, mental and emotional growth is so very important. Not all of it hurts...and some even happens naturally....smiling here.
