Does a piece of paper make
a marriage
This question I ponder
today
I have mixed emotions on this
subject
Because of what taught and life's
observations
So many today have not
commitment
Here today and then gone
tomorrow
Even in the event of
Holy Matrimony
Lives not planned
out to be
Seperations,  divorces,  hurt,
confusion
Lives of men,  women,  children
torn apart

My Love and I have
commitment
We've pledged our love to
each other
Promising to always be
together
Until death do us
part
Together for quite a few
years,  we are
Depending on each other
with trust
Never wanting to hurt or harm the other,
to protect
Feeling as if already united,
husband and wife
United together in love,  joy eternally,
forever and a day
"Married" in every sense of
the word
Except on a piece of
paper
We are totally committed
united together
We are a marriage of hearts
united by God

i too have mixed feelings. i once felt that it's just a piece of paper, sometimes a womans desire to be a princess for a day, i vowed i would never be like that. though i still felt joy for others who wanted to marry, i still feel that if love is truly alive, god has already recognised , and married these souls, even if they are not legally married.
i truly believed i would never marry ever.

Then i found the man i know i will marry, who i had previously known for many years, and though i may be young, only 20, i know.

Some might say i'm young and know nothing of life yet. But i know myself, and i know the man i love.

i love the thoughts in this Ethel.

United together in love,  joy eternally,
forever and a day
"Married" in every sense of
the word
Except on a piece of
paper
We are totally committed
united together
We are a marriage of hearts
united by God

you said it so well. your words are so wise and true.
lots of love, gemma xxxxxx

learning each day, for you and i, our paths have met, i've already learnt that you are love.

Gemma, I really do believe in marriage. But, I think that too
many couples have married out of obligation or because of
what they've been taught. Never fully realizing what the
word "Marriage" really means. I believe that when it is true
and lasting love, the couple feels married before the actual
vows are said. I have a feeling that you and your Love feel
the same as Gary and I do about each other...already "married".

(tears fall down my cheeks) Oh Ethel, I believe every marriage should be like that and free of "Please sign here and there and put todays date" battalion! (sad sigh) I hope your love always shines and you hold the true beauty of marriage to heart, sweet friend, I pray someday I may get to lift my loves veil and kiss her in front of my loved ones, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Ethel, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,

yes, a piece of paper,
if youre young with kiddies and just starting out, its easier with the piece of paper , once the marriage ends, to track down daddy for child support when he takes off
after the younger days, who needs it?

In high school, I thought "it's only a piece of paper."  But then, I had to ask myself "if it's only a piece of paper, why are so many people afraid/unwilling to get it?"

It represents the ultimate commitment, when a couple is bound by the law.  It offers protection/rights to the spouse that a verbal commitment alone can't give.  If a person is committed to another, wouldn't they do all they can (and are able) to protect their loved one?

Yes, inkedgoddess, when a couple is young and first
starting out, this is  very necessary. I don't think
any woman should plan to have a child with a man who doesn't
love her enough to get married....legally.

Yes, Tara, you are totally right.
You may have misunderstood what I was trying to say here.
What I meant was that there are so many couples who
go into marriage without even knowing what it's all about....
Not even knowing for sure that's the person they want to
spend the rest of their lives with....not even really
liking   the type person they are marrying.
Getting married just for the sake of it's the   right   thing for them to do.....
Not getting married because they truly love someone.
When I married the first time, I didn't even know what
REAL  LOVE  was....probably why it ended in divorce.
I am only saying that a couple should be sure they know what
kind of person they are marrying before they get the
"piece of paper".
I know that legal matters are to be taken into
consideration, but I don't think a couple should
get married just for security, either....or for money or what
they can get from the other material wise.
In other words, I really believe that to make a marriage
work, the couple (both of them)need to totally
agree that they will work together at making it work.
One person can't do this all by themselves....it
has to be a mutual effort.....that's what I meant by
feeling already "married" and about being "married"
not just because there's a piece of paper.

(BTW, this talk comes from many past experiences and
mistakes made by me, personally)

Sweetie, I'd say you have this all figured out. Paper makes it legal, but loving from the heart makes it a lifetime.

And in case you didn't see the reply, thank you again for the beautiful email.

Loves and hugs, Marti

I can only stay a few minutes at a time as it's just too painful to sit for very long! But, I wasn't able to be here yesterday and I miss reading all the poems.

Hopefully, tomorrow will be a better day!

Hugs again, Marti

Well, just my humble (often wrong) opinion, but  yes, marriage is more than a piece of paper, much more....and more than a way to track someone, or legally hold them to commitments. I believe that is one of the most beautiful things two people can do, before God's eyes. It saddens me how it is looked upon now adays, but if you'd like to read more, I will send you a link. Explains a lot. This write though, was extremely good!!

Thank you, Dennis, for your reply. Your comments and
opinions are very good ones.
As you may have read in my response to a reply earlier,
I do believe in marriage, and my Love and I will be married
soon, but I think most couples take marriage too lightly.
I meant in my poem, that a "marriage" is  MORE
than a piece of paper, not that it is unnecessary.......
and that my Love and I already feel the commitment and the
dedication to each other that a "married" couple should feel. It's
as if we are already married.....

Ethel,
Yup, you have all the ingredients. So get married already. You guys were made for each other!

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.
