naivete
what a theme
to build upon
like a sandcastle
in the headlights of high tide
burgundy lips
and no back pockets
cause me to mumble
daggers and gems
they fall flat
on the frigid concrete landscape
undermining my expectancy
for a warm resonance;
a reply outside the lie

building an empire
one miscalculation at a time
an arena
that will house ideas
and little else
another year arrives
the previous one is led into the alley
shot in the back of the head
justice is served
vodka is served
on ice, in a tall glass
sitting here alone with it
I realize
all the eloquent lampshades
and clever lighting solutions
I have gathered
still, are not the sun
the light they emit
is not even half as strong
as the image you used to project
when I still had illusions
illusions and hope:
the resume of youth

Enjoyed the read. Liked the last line and it says so much. Though we grow up it is still often easy to fall back into that first line, naivity...no matter age...

Warm regards, Pat

Another masterfully written peek into the alleyways, Steven.
Even bundles of burning sage and lavendar can't ward off the stench of Venice. You bundle it up nicely somehow, and damn near make it palatable. But I'll stay clear of those sewage alleyways; saw too much harsh daylight there years ago.
Still wishing you well, Kacy.

OK, so I'm holding onto that resume as long as I can.
