She sat quietly on her porch
witnessing the white cotton caps
flowing from the restless sea.
A candle glowed in the window
flickering like a torch, bouncing
midnight shadows from the trees.

An eternity has passed since she
knew the sensations of his caresses,
his whispers, the music in his voice,
the sound of his labored footsteps
clapping the worn wooden floor.

Rememberances from a distressing past
she vaguely recalled the meager memory
of what became an everlasting moment.
His pace painfully slow that morning,
he drifted aimlessly into the faded path.

The darkened shadow of him embedded
in her mind as he departed that summer,
alive as a blemished memory- now inheriting
the tear flowing down her reddened cheek.
Her heart pounding its familiar dull ache
as she replays the visions of malicious deceit.

Twenty five years longing for
Shadows and footsteps –
Tonight-
Candlelight kissed the darkness,
Tonight-
she sleeps her final sleep-

Never have a read a poem that depicted a lost love as well as you have done with this one.  Your last line could mean so many things to whomever is reading it at the time.  I see it as a woman in love who is dying without the one who has been in her heart her entire lifetime by her side.

I would be curious as to the author's explanation of this line and how you wanted it to be taken.

Welcome to Passions and I know I am going to thoroughly enjoy your work - this was simply outstanding.

Juliette, this is an extraordinary piece.  It reminds me of my grandparents in years gone by.  My grandfather predeceased my grandmother by several years, and she never stopped pining for him.  Eventually, her time came as well - She went peacefully and happily to his side.  Thank you for sharing this with us...

Thank you all for your comments. I do look forward to meeting all of you. This has made my day! For those of you that were curious about where the "thought" came from I was in New England last month and there was an old newspaper article from late 1800's that was about a woman that had lit a candle for her husband every night after he had left her. As the poem indicated she passed away in her old age waiting for him, believe it or night he did show up at the house five years after she died. The story really touched me and I doubt if I will ever forget it. You guys have a good night.

Juliette - I was listening to the blues when I read this poem. The beat seemed to be in synch with the words. This is a very stunning write, I like it very much...

Juliette, you captivated me with this fine piece of art. I felt like I was reading a love novel, and was wanting to read all the details of this wonderful romance. I thank you for explaining from where you got the inspiration for this beautiful love poem. Have you ever thought of writing a novel? Just curious. I personally think it would be a best seller.
Thanks so much for sharing your work here at PIP. I'm looking forward to reading much more of your work.

Love To All,
Ethel

It is an awesome poem, and I'm so very happy that you gave explanation of its inspiration. Because the last line could mean more than one thing, my thoughts, analytically, were that one does not know the time or the hour s/he will die..not for certain, unless they commit suicide, I was concerned for that possible meaning.

It is sad, nonetheless, but to take one's life would be sadder still, esp. since he returned after her passing.

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.

This one is unbelievably captivating, with all the lonliness and hurt reaching out to touch as one reads.  So well written....

Pen how you truly feel...
