Penned On Parchment

In the quiet solitude of the evening
she sits alone in this room she loves
surrounded by its familiar warmth.

With her quill poised in gloved hand
the lit candle provides glowing light
illuminating in flickers from the mantle.

Aromatic scents of lilac on the breeze
waifs gently through the open window
as her mind drifts along in endless query.

The sounds of a lonesome train whistle
blowing in the distance reminds her
that it is now midnight and time to slumber.

The passing train clickity clacks
down the tracks as the night
again grows silent in its solitude.

She thwarts the idea of sleep.
With her mind now full of images
she rises to sit at her writing desk.

Ever so delicately she dips the quill
in the never ending bottle of ink
touching it to the aged parchment.

Slightly the parchment does crackle
as her thoughts flow from spirit to page
as once again the poet within emerges.

Penned in eternity on the aged parchment
written with the eloquence of her soul
she writes this, the journey of her life.

Softly the breeze blows through yon window
drying the ink, capturing this moment of life.
Slumber now returns as she drifts off to dream.

Oh, Donna...this is so beautiful. I could see the lady sitting there writing her beautiful poetry as all her thoughts were flowing from her mind to her pen. Thanks for sharing this picture with words.

This is an absolutely treasure of a write.
Such a tender and touching verse...a gentle haunting of sorts.
VERY nicely done.

Donna,  this is awesome....I could feel the
peacefulness of this ...  the pause prior
to that one moment when words patiently
flowed onto the aged surface of what would
soon become a masterpiece of a poet's
inner self...

It is the ideal mood of poetry. That is how I wish I could write poetry, in the cool shadows by a lit candle. But I have to do it in secret, because I am selfish and only share with myself and you guys. Just can't bring myself to show my mom

Thank you all.  I picked this one to repost mostly cuz I haven't written anything new and cuz it is my own personal favorite.  It's been a great 4000 and I am looking forward to more.

This is so eloquent.  I can picture fine lace and the white gloves.  Very vivid images.   So softly beautiful.

Donna, congratulations on the milestone.
This evoked a mood from a Victorian painting. Lovely.

Absolutely beautiful, delicate feel to this. It is romantic and of Victorian flavor, in my summation. There would be but two critiques to help the wonderfully smooth feel of the most of this...waifs should be 'wafts' as waifs are poor children, orphans, wafts means travels on the breeze. The other would be, instead of "does crackle" the flow would be less interrupted with "crackles" in the place of those two words.

I love the peace 'she' is filled with once her thoughts find their way onto the parchment.

Beautiful!

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.

Well, look what I almost missed!

Congratulatory hugs are in order for having reached the milestone of 4,000 posts!

Then you delight me with a poem that I wish that I had written--but I'm glad that you did it for me--and so wondrously at that!

.......there, I just put this fine and nostalgic piece of writing in a nice cosy berth in my library to be treasured and read from time to time....
