I poured a cup of coffee,
And reached and got a book.
From a shelf there in my study,
And I didn't even look...

I knew it was a good one,
I don't keep trash around.
But as I took a closer look,
This is what I found.

It was my Grandpa's Bible-
Bought in nineteen twenty-three.
And pasted on the flyleaf-
Was a photograph of me.

I must have been about thirteen,
Messed hair, and gap-toothed grin.
And somehow in my memories,
I found myself, back then.

Back then, I had no worries.
Just hunt, and fish, and play.
And do my chores around the house,
At close of every day.

Back then, I had a brother,
He was killed in ninety-six.
A victim of the the city life,
We were raised out in the sticks.

Back then, a Sunday morning-
Meant we all could sleep in late.
And wave at people passing,
Long before I learned to hate.

My mother, and my daddy-
Were still alive and well...
The heartaches that we all could face,
Thank God, we could not tell.

Back then, he'd work twelve hours,
Then we'd go down to the creek.
Where he'd hush my childish chatter-
And we could hear the country speak.

I gently closed the covers-
Put it back where it had been...
And I whispered, "Pop, I love you-
Wish I'd told you more, back then".

Gunslinger,
I do indeed enjoy your tender heart. I find this to be a keeper. Have I told you lately you are an awesome poet? Well you are.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

Oh yes, John...what would we do without all those sweet memories to go back to? I love the way you brought your feelings out in this poem. Thanks for sharing your heart.
Love To All,
Ethel

I still cling
to thoughts of them,
sitting close by,
listening, and shadows
of trees nod,
agreeing...
