It's painful to trust someone,
believe in the honesty between you,
and, then find out
so much deception exists.
So shocking, your own sense of
self-worth is shaken.
And, so difficult
as you try to sort out
your sense of betrayal
from their right to privacy.

You try to understand
the basis for the deceit,
but, at the same time you feel like
you'll never be able
to trust anyone again.
It seems to undermine the faith
you have in yourself
and, in your own judgement
of people.

And, even when you finally
begin to comprehend
the depth of the illusion created,
you can barely acknowledge it!
You care so much,
it's almost impossible to accept
that ~kind of flaw~
in someone you trust
and, believe in so completely.

But, with gut-wrenching honesty,
you must now face the truth,
then grieve the death
of someone who never even existed,
and, pray you will find the
strength to deal with
the bitterness left behind.

..without surrender, be on good terms with all persons..

Pat ~

I just posted a poem on this same subject, but fortunately, that pain is behind me---I hope your's is as well.

This grabbed my tummy and twisted it, but it made me realize how far I have come. May you be well on your way to recovery from a broken heart.

Linda

Linda, I believe poetry is timeless and universal. This was written in 1981.  Didn't see yours up, just got home little while ago. I'll look. And, no I am not suffering in the least little bit. I read a lot of poems in here of heartache and they often remind me of old poems I had written.
I shall go find yours right now. I saw one heartbreaker about stay one more night, but no trust one. I'll go look.
Warmly,
Pat

Pat, I tend to give friends the benefit of the doubt and trust them until they prove themselves unworthy.  I'm always truthful and should someone break a trust then he/she is no longer my friend.   If trust is broken it's not a flaw in you, but a flaw in their own character.  Please believe that.  Nice write, my friend.

The stars will shine when I am gone,
the earth will turn on as before,
the gulls, still race along the shore,
the morning star, still kiss the dawn
