He looks around the world today
And he don't like what he sees
Honesty and Loyalty
Measured in degrees

Who's the crook and who's the victim?
These days it's hard to say
Black ain't black, and white ain't white
They're both just shades of gray

“Yes” and “No”, they both mean “Maybe”
“We” and “Us”, they both mean “You”
And all-or-nothing’s given way
To “half of anything will do”

But words that come from half a heart
Are better left unspoken
'Cause any promise half-way kept
Is one completely broken

We’ve learned to work around the rules
Why break what you can bend?
But half the truth is still a lie
And you can't trust half a friend

Xcellent!  This is so true and so "laid out there" for all to see and recognize.  This poem comes to me just after learning of a teacher in my son's public school who was arrested for assault and battery of a student.  Seems a young child, probably 11, fell asleep in the teacher's class, and so the teacher took his nerf ball, a small one the size of a golf ball, and tossed it onto his shoulders to wake him up.  Lo and behold, he told his parents and they have filed a lawsuit.  Tisk, tisk.  Should the teacher have done it?  Should the student's family have made such a big deal about it?  Seems a little gray to me!  I enjoyed reading your poem very much.

Gerry,

This is a wonderful first post.

I like:

..."cause any promise left half-way
    kept is one completely broken."

and the last line:

"And you can't trust half a friend"

          ~WELCOME TO PASSIONS~

I'm looking forward to reading more of your poetry.

Warm Regards, Pat

Welcome. And a half-hearted reply won't do, either. It's never so clear cut to me in life as black and white, as circumstances vary into the shades of grey.
Enjoyed the thoughts.

I liked your poem & I add my welcome to you ....I especially like the passage below

-----------------------------------------
But words that come from half a heart
Are better left unspoken
'Cause any promise half-way kept
Is one completely broken

We’ve learned to work around the rules
Why break what you can bend?
But half the truth is still a lie
And you can't trust half a friend
-----------------------------------------

We have lost so many values as a culture ....half friends ..... half vows ...... half our words

... and they sent him home happy ... one hundred percent.

A very wise and well conceived first post...
And a Carolinian too....  Nothing too shabby
about both of those...
