To Return Again On Hallow’s Eve

Comes this night, just once, each year
his spirit awaits, that she should hear
the voice of her love, then quit her bower
on Hallow’s Eve, at the midnight hour

She’s walked the halls these years long past
her cry a sob in the winds so vast
for the one night that she again may meet
the soul for whom her spirit entreats

Her passage this night will take her beyond
the walls of her home, t'ward the pond,
as the moon surges up t’ward dark skies
to yon meadow’s clearing she shall arrive

Shhh, you can hear her soft and sweet refrain
‘tis tune of Greensleeves she sings again
for her lover sang sweet this, their ballad
and he promised herself to be a true lad

And to him, she was his Lady Greensleeves
she did him no wrong, but was left to grieve
for to war he went, then did not return
he was her love, all others she spurned

But on an Eve, on a Hallowe’d night
past pond and clearing, under pale moonlight
she caught a glimpse, his spirit came ‘round
then followed him, they retrieved her, drowned

So comes this night, just once, each year,
his spirit awaits, that she should hear
the voice of her love, then quit her bower
on Hallow’s Eve, at the midnight hour

Ahh..so lovely dear Karilea...
As I read, I heard the lilting strains
of Greensleeves playing in my mind..
Hauntingly beautiful!

I love this and I'm saving it! It is so ethereal and mystifying.

From now on, whenever I sing and play Greensleeves on my guitar, I'll think of this poem---and I'll be looking over my shoulder!

This is what happens when young ladies go skinny dipping after having too many spirits.

This is a neat story, Karilea.  I see you are as great as ever.

Even her spirit still waits, very sad, what torment.
This flowed perfectly Sunshine, you’ve penned a spellbinding piece.

There is so much reality in this piece, it felt like I was standing there watching the whole thing. Hauntingly realistic and very intriguing.

Great writing -- Hugs and shivers, Marti

Karilea~
This is a very cool write, my friend.
Had me intrigued all the way through.
I know it's been used many times already,
but 'haunting' really does describe this well.
