Each step taken, one cautiously forward
followed by one rapidly back.
Trust me, echoing through a mind as a
heart beats rapidly in cautious drumming.

Each word said, skewed, turned against
as cautious smiles and worried eyes cast
upon the scene, one played countless times.
The Quest.....

As does the fawn, hiding among the reeds,
tall grasses hiding worried eyes.  Eyes that
fail to blink for fear of being seen or worse,
being sounded out and found to be...
afraid.

Always skeptical, the guard posted at the
gates of chaste, the gates of one’s heart.
As ears hear the same cliches, the same
lines of the conquest.   Sabers rattling
as minds whirr, ever defensive,
wishing to be free, to smile,
to trust.

Come to me, the spider whispers to the fly.
For I am thy guardian, my hunger sated by
countless other more formidable creatures.
Come to me,   I comfort...I shall keep
the hounds away as the baying warns the
fox to hide....

Thee woman, most beautiful....
Frail of body, yet strong of will, of mind.
Rest on the shoulder of trust.  Fear not
the web of deceit.   For the cub rests
among the reeds as a lioness sleeps
peacefully, knowing the prize is safe
yet one more day....

Magnus, Unless I highlight the entire poem, there are simply too many lines, which I love, to point out.

This is a treasure!

(big hugggsssssss) Oh Barry, this is fabulous, sweet friend, you speak of a whole menagerie here, the beginning of the poem reminded me of Jewett's "The White Heron" and the decision to be secluded or open in the face of nature or with man, as the end wrapped a wonderful love poem! (sigh) This is excellent, sweet friend, I love it, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Barry, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!
