Rain Sounds

There are places in the house
where the sound of rain
seems to imitate voices;
the alcove in the loft,
where the roof slopes precipitously
and, during a light downfall,
makes me think of whispers
tapped through the internet;
adjacent to the glass door beside which
a rocker sits and with its movement,
back and forth upon the floor,
responds with something like a round of cracks
to soft, sweet circles
at play upon the cedar deck;
beside the hearth,
when flames are gone
but just enough of heat remains
to fizzle drops
that manage,
still,
to find their way
down the shaft.

Wow, Bob, this is excellent! The feel of it is so soothing, the sounds and images are captivating. It drips loveliness down the page. I hope you send this in to the Oregonian poetry editor. Oregonians would really enjoy seeing the rain through your eyes and ears.

Hi V. Is there still a poetry editor at the "Oregonian"? Years ago verse use to sneek into the "Northwest" section. Anyway....thanks for the appreciation. Bob PS Some weather we're getting, yes?

Tim....thank you for taking a moment. Bob

Bob

Enjoyed this so much, the sounds of rain at your place make me want to visit.  The rain was quiet here, too, like a whisper, but didn't think of it that way until I read your lovely verse.

Robert...

the wind shifted
at midnight
and leaves clattered
like fat drops of rain
swooshing along the street
and upon the roof...

it sounded so very wet
when I looked out
I only saw
a pool of leaves...

Yes, Bob, we had lovely rain here all night, I think, and now we're being drenched with gorgeous sunshine bringing brilliance to the wetness of the world.

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.

Robert, I enjoyed this very much. It's raining here, too, but it didn't sound as soothing as the rain in your poem sounded. Thanks for sharing those sounds.

The sound of a gentle rain falling on the roof at night...you  created both images and sounds in my mind with this verse...

Hi Bob,

good to see your words again. After months of no rain here, it was quite an opening of the storm door, yes?

You probably got more than we did, too!

Enjoyed this.

RMW,
no rain here, except in wish. But your work showed how it should be done.
