Pawns, all in a row.
Sweat beading from nerves
as hearts thud mercilessly.
Eyes showing the fear.

Afraid to step forward,
wanting so desperately to..
RUN, run, run away.

Yet, running will bring death,
certain death, for the grim
gallows stand silent in wait.
A step forward carries
a chance of life, of liberty.

The thunderous roar of guns,
smoke hazed air, stinging
a throat wanting only to scream.
Fear quells the waiting cords
as silence rings loud against
the din of death exploding.

So many, mere boys, babes,
tears streaming from dirt covered
faces still blushing from youth.
Stumbling on unsteady legs, legs
feeling the weight of a world...
Stepping over, around, slipping
on crimson colored grass.

“Whites of their eyes”, paraphrasing
a statement once made. Staring
down the dark end of death,
waiting for darkness to take
the soul, bring peace..

How can one kill when one can
only shiver uncontrollably from fear?

Iron nerves...only He might possess
this will? For they, the mortal,
the multitudes, they shivered as
countless died from a hail of death
falling unseen. Again and again.
Forgive me if I seem to be momentarily stuck on
a piece of our history....

(tears fall down my cheeks) Oh Barry, no apologies are needed, for war is still a horror that hasn't diminished in our world today and I only pray for the future generations that these kind of actions can disappear and never again would we be forced to kill countless pawns of our fellow man! (big hugggssssss) This is very striking, sweet friend, God Bless You, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Barry, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

This makes me think of the civil war and the revolutionary, although so much of it could be any way.Although, pawns make me think of those maybe not all that willing for battle, but having it required of them by their 'leaders.'

Powerful piece, powerful message.

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.

I agree with VAS that the Civil War came to mind and the horror of war was tangible and frightening...
I cried the whole time at the Arizona...I could still feel it and was overcome with the tears of wives, mothers, sisters, and lovers.
You truly wrote this skilled piece with excellence. ( but tha's all I seem to ever find from Magnus..( I am a true fan:supersmile:....)

Barry, I too am in awe of your work.
As others said, I felt like I was right
there in the "Civil War" (??) with you.
You are sooo talented, Sir.
Thanks for sharing with us.

Are you having past-life recall? My gawd, it's as if you brought me right on to the battle field with you!

I was born on former battlefields of the War of 1812 and our family homesteads were erected on them. For  my whole life I have been seeing and feeling the presence of many of those who perished there during the battles of that war.
You're bringing it all back to me--again....

an image, so vivid of the fear of the 'Line'
the first to see the blood
the first to draw it
In ancient times they squared up on a single line, face to face, and in that vein, this mesmerized me, Magnus.

Oh, well written.  In the smoke and the dirt, a hero is the one who can stumble forward and still think of what he's doing there.

I don't know, others saw the cival war, I saw the Houlocost. Helpless and trembling in fear. In the cival war, they had wepons. Either way, I truely enjoyed it.

Magnus darling heart, you don’t know how proud I am of you when you write like this. That you can write well I acknowledge, when you write and the emotion is so strong I applaud you, when you do so without having the personal experience or trauma in your life I stand and shout well done. Without doubt you are inarguably a fantastic writer, I can almost smell the blood and taste the fear. This is truly one of your utter utter best. I love this utterly utterly YOU are an amazing writing and this is incredibly well written.

A beautifully written piece, Barry...
At first I thought you were playing chess... but that too... afterall, is a war of sorts... depending on the players...
But I see that you were describing blood and guts here... and it could be any war any time any place...
You vividly expressed those gruesome times, whenever or wherever they were

To everyone...thank you....and to me it
was the Civil War....though it could have
been any number of wars....even the
victims of the Holocaust....
