            Holy Cow Scooter

He lifted his head from his grass grazing
And watched as his trainer approached the paddock.
His nostrils flared...
His ears flashed forward as he turned around...
One hoof pounded the ground.

The trainer loved this horse.
Holy Cow Scooter was a keen competitor...
Race tempered stallion steeled...
With a need to run...to win.
Recovering now from a mosquito-carried virus, the fight to live was the starter's gate he was in.

The battle back was not easy..
from numbing paralysis, the stallion was now able to stand...
Today he ran...
Kicked up his heels and ran.

But the trained eye...that only a seasoned horseman has...
Saw the flaw in the gait.
And knew the proud stallion would never thunder down the home stretch again.
A pastured retirement among the mares was all that would await...
Now he had to convince Holy Cow Scooter to accept this fate.

...believe what your heart feels.....

Descriptive and causes me to apply the theme to human beings. Thought provoking. Thanks.

I suppose every cloud does have its silver lining.

---At least there will be some perks to his being put out to pasture!

You have such a kind and compassionate heart. Do you own a horse or work with them?

Thank you for your encouragements...Holy Cow Scooter is  real horse...a pacer.   He contacted West Nile Virus three weeks ago.  It attacked his nervous system and left him paralysized...but he has fought back...and can run again...but his left rear leg is nerve damaged...He will never race again...I met him while on an assignment and was taken by his spirit and presence...this is my tribute to Holy Cow Scooter...I'm very glad you took the time to read the poem and comment on it... Thank you..

Scorpio..I do believe this horse was quite well known in this area. You did a great job of telling us just one of the many things that can happen to champion race horses..
how very sad...
Much enjoyed you recounting this true story.

Scorpio, this is a very good poem. I liked the way you wrote it. By the way, my little dog's name is "Scooter". Thanks for sharing this story with us. It's so sad. It reminded me of how poor greyhound dogs are done after they can't race anymore. I'm glad that some of them are adopted, though. I hope that the owners will love this horse enough to still care for it.

Love To All,
Ethel

Scorpio,

This is an amazing yet extremely sad tale you have told here. The tale is amazing in that it could have been written in total imagery reminding humans to never forget the strength within. As for Holy Cow Scooter, I hope also that his owners will see this beautiful horse for what he must be and allow him to live the rest of his life in peace and dignity.
