I gave it all I had to give,
And then tossed in my hand.
A failure at the sport I loved,
Another "also ran".

The day that I turned thirty-six,
I sadly realized...
That for a man to be the Champ,
It takes much more than "try".

But still I went on down the road,
Fast running out of steam.
It's hard to keep your heart in it,
When you have lost your dream.

Next summer I'll turn fifty.
Now, friend, that's just too old.
For "buckin' chutes", and run down boots,
With no hope for the gold.

I thought about what I could do,
It chills me to the bone-
That all that's left, from this time on,
Is sit here all alone.

I know how it is to be alone. That was what I was before I found Liam. Good write

First of all this was very emotive, it affected me...The writing was quite powerful in it's ability to conjure up emotions, and I felt it came deeply from some place in you...

...that said I hope you don't mind me saying that 50 or whenever isn't too old, a dream is still a dream and although I relaise there are restrictions on reality, you can get it or live even if just a bit...and you're not ALL alone, cause I'm writing this and there's heaps of other people out there who feel just like you...like the desiderata says "strive to be happy" all we can do is try....great poem.

Gunslinger...the sport you love is not an easy one..I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that...but I admire you for participating in it...perhaps the gold comes from having done it...so few have burst from the chute and ridden the wild ride...but you have...the gold is in the experience

...believe what your heart feels...

'Slinger....man, I know the feeling...I used to fight in the now defunct PKA...I just knew I'd be champ someday...I'd taken the finest Martial Arts, boxing, grappling kickboxing available, from some of the finest instructors in the world...fought twice...undefeated....third fight...I heard two bells....and, decided to quit...I still don't remember that fight...but I'm pretty sure I lost...Well, my son convinced me to fight again several years later in a few tough man competitions....I won 12 fights...and after the last fight I hurt all over for several weeks and decided: "Yanno, even Muhammad Ali had enough sense to quit sooner or later?"....NOw I just support kids and write awful poetry.....sad to get old ain't it? (of course, when ya read my poetry you can understand why I write like I do...all those hits to the head I'd imagine?"
