You didn’t notice
That I was your bulwark
That I turned away all
Assaults on your saneness

You didn’t notice
That I was the bastion
That beat back the tirades
That threatened your mind

You never noticed
That I was the buttress
That held high, your honor
From that, which would stain

You wouldn’t notice
That I was the fortress
That surrounded your heart
Your redoubt from doubt

But, did you notice
The abuse I absorbed
Or was I just, merely
Your emotional tampon

KARI? I'm feeling a little flushed now...GROAN...

wranx...funny, I have used that expression before--and sorry, it's difficult to reply now without innuendo (blame it on the sunshine!) But please know that I did enjoy!

Definately a "yank" at the end. Pure wranx style.

A puppet show with the strings showing.

Enjoyed -- and that's the beauty of writing, that you can enjoy something well-crafted that is random and ugly in life (in this case, a relationship gone to seed).

Such a serious poem, and then that zinger of a line!  Some people just don't know how lucky they are to have someone willing to shield them from life's pains.  Then again, perhaps we aren't really helping them by shielding them from reality.
