There was the first bedroom
where I slept and lay in bed when ill
I would plot my life and hone some skills
with the door open after a scary picture...
the place was capped by glazed light fixture
the window had Venetian blinds,
the slats would never be quite parallel
I would have trouble getting them adjusted
then I was bothered by the skimpy drapes
they were never really full length
I wanted to hide behind them, sometimes
but my legs always showed.

This room was my base
independent of its shape, size, layout and...
I had a couple of favorite furniture pieces:
my first real wood bookcase, I varnished myself
none of that press board stuff
its space was never quite enough
so I thought,
too few shelves to pack those penquin classics
especially if I was to go on reading..

there was a handed down uncle's World War 1 desk
one with the tiny little cubby hole drawers
used to like dabbing lemon oil into the wood
tucked away, behind the door, its oak shape stood

that desk, my fort, was a place of thought
and it held my pens, erasers and imaginings
pondered about its antique brass latches
how many times this was opened and closed
and the hand that was used then and now...

those pieces of furniture are long gone
do I miss them as I reminisce
of how they were used?
to some degree life would have been simpler,
had I kept these furnishings
but life is more than just the accumulation of possessions...
more like a series of bedroom changes in succession.

a nice gentle visit through your thoughts as you pondered the bedroom, some good vivid images described...the desk seemed to be a focal point of the poem, but I love your last line...life is more than possessions.

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.

This took me right there into that room.  What a wonderful piece of poetry, and of course the message is the icing on the cake.

The most valuable thing you own is a smile, wear it, and share it.
