Again...
Standing there, the tears, the final hugs...
The hands reluctantly pulling apart...
Trying to tell a child goodbye without tears
flowing from eyes...

The lonely walk down a long pier to “work”.
Work was 24/7 with no holidays....
Weekends were often only 12 hours of peace
before the reality of the routine came into
your ears with the sounding of the next alarm.

“Man Battle Stations Missile” waking you from
too short a sleep....Jumping out of your bed (bunk)..
Hurriedly putting on clothes, running to your station
against a clock that moves ever faster....

You have practiced so many times, even in your sleep.
Even in dreams, years after the “last patrol” you still
relive those moments of stark awakening, not knowing
if it were real, or....  just another practice drill.
Honing your ability to annihilate half of the world in
a matter of minutes...  The somber reality....

IF I ever had to, could I?  Would I?
Why not?  Because IF I ever do, it only means we
are striking back....our families are probably gone..
And now, it is their turn....

And from the ashes, shall rise the Phoenix....

The End Of The World As We Knew It!
Pray that we never see this moment grace the pages
of history....For, if we do...it surely will be...

Ah, good sir...that would not be a gracing of the pages, now would it...

how we pray
that no child
should have a father
who would find need
to write a poem
such as this.

Barry,
An excellent write and read. I know about the service from a friend. I prefered the air to the water, but it was the same.

I remember a line from a song by Sting."I hope the Russians love their children too".Peace is most loved by those who have practiced war.

Sun,  I too hope that no father ever has to
write a poem about this as a statement after
the fact, so to speak....

Sy...you are right, it is no different,  the
art of war,  the practice of war and the
reality of it are sobering thoughts..

Keth...easy to write what one has felt,
many times...

Paladin...You hit the nail right on the
head...It is easy to love peace when you
have practiced for just the opposite,
time after time....

Marge,  sorry for the chill....but when one
has experienced the moment and reflected on
the reality...it is so easy to convey the
feel of it,  even when it chills...

If my words can touch a soul,  that they
may cherish their freedom,  their home
and those they love...just a little more,
that is a wonderful gift I give freely..

Bsquirrel...  I have taken your name and
said...what is it?  Is it sorta B esquire L
or what?....Anyway,  Thank You!  Pleases
me that this could bring something good
from it...

Barry, this speaks of some scary possibilities. And I can see the child in the beginning, so well.
Good work.

Sandra...yes,  you never forget the feelings
of your children, or the sadness in their
eyes when you depart...or the gleam when
you return....and that great big hug.....

Martie,  because of our Nation's efforts
as a strong nation that has prospered
and gained a technological edge....we have
peace,  in spite of recent events that
attempt to shatter our peace...  I too
pray we always can have peace and never
endure again the wars that we have had.

(big hugggssssssss) Oh Barry, I too hope this never happens, I think of all the children of tomorrow and how they will handle the legacies of justice and leadership we all currently struggle to hang on to! (sigh) This is very powerful and pounding, sweet friend, God Bless You, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Barry, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,

Barry, You say volumes in this... and I know you depend on the eternal benevalence of the western world to conclude that "whoever it was" started it and we are only ending it... I remember reading science fiction as a part of my English lit classes in highschool.  "There will come soft rains" is the poem... that inspired the short story of the same name of a computerized house who's technology continues even after its occupants are gone remembered only as burnt ash images on the back side of the house... with ball still in the air.... it is a chilling though... pray we never see that day.

Sherry

Cherish the good memories past and look forward to the adventure called Tomorrow.
But above all... be kind to yourself today.
